The Requirements for a typical production piece for Coursework
There are 5 main stages in any production task. Depending on your coursework level you may be asked to submit evidence of all of them or just some of them. The stages are:

1) Pre-Production - this might include...
  • research in the issues or area if relevant
  • researching the current media texts on the topic (for example TV
  • health advertising, if you have been asked to create a TV health advert)
  • researching the target audience or identifying a specific demographic  (for example teenagers or specifically teenage boys)
  • researching a range of media products which are aimed at the target audience or demographic (for example examining several TV texts aimed at
  • teenage boys analysing the codes and conventions which would appeal to them)

2) Planning - this might include...
  • storyboards, giving detailed information about shots, angles, audio etc.
  • scripts
  • design layouts and sketches (for print media)
  • logo and/or slogan designs selections of possible fonts
  • checking locations, actors/actresses, risk assessment, rehearsal etc.
  • a Treatment giving details of the products you are going to create. This is sometimes also called a Statement of Intent and is a written record using words to describe what you want to create visually in a print advert or a short TV sequence. It should explain the main content and your 'vision' of how you want it to look or feel. This should be based on all the research you have carried out in the pre-production stage.
  • some evidence of feedback from your target audience, whether they think your product is effective, clear etc. and changes where necessary.

3) Production - this will include...
  • carrying out the practical tasks to create your media product, showing high production values.
4) Post-Production - this might include...
  • editing
  • adding audio
  • cutting
  • cropping
  • re-designing
5) Evaluation - this might include...
  • a written statement of why you wanted to create the products you did
  • what was successful or problematic in the process
  • what would you do differently
  • evidence of target audience response to finished product.
As an example, in the film industry, 70-80% of the time and work goes into pre-production, planning and post-production work. To shoot a film takes only 6-8 weeks but it may take up to 2 years for a film to actually be made!
